General description | The Fire Ecology provides much-needed knowledge for proper management of the natural environment, given the global significance of forest fires, particularly in the ecosystems of the Iberian Peninsula. This course will study the phenomenon of forest fires from a multi-scale and multi-temporal perspective, analyzing changes in fire regimes due to human activity and climate change. It will address the primary causes and motivations of forest fires, essential for establishing effective prevention strategies. The most significant and influential factors in the behavior of forest fires will be examined. Additionally, the effects of fire on soil nutrient dynamics, water balance, soil microorganisms, short-term and long-term vegetation response, and effects on fauna will be analyzed. Criteria for managing fire, from traditional use to fire surveillance and prevention in vulnerable areas, will be provided. Finally, guidelines for restoring burned areas will be explained. Practical classes will study post-fire regeneration mechanisms and fuel models in the field using the scientific method. Experiments and sampling will be designed, data will be collected and statistically analyzed, and the information they provide will be discussed. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
