Descripción general This course aims at offering the students, once the practical command of English grammar has been acquired, the opportunity to systematise their knowledge within the wider context of linguistic theory. The course will be focused on grammar description, with a loose discourse/functional overall approach. It thus provides the necessary background for prospective issues in the curriculum for English Philology, such as pragmatics and discourse analysis.

Objetivos

"CONTENTS 1.- General introduction: The meaning of ""grammar"". Grammaticality. Historical background. 2.- Morphology: inflectional morphology and derivational morphology. Word-formation processes in English. 3.- Basic sentence structure: Constituent structure. Syntactic categories and grammatical functions: slots and fillers. The subject: syntax, semantic roles and discourse functions. The predicate. Transitive verbs and direct objects. Intransitive verbs. Ditransitive verbs and indirect objects. Copulas and subject complements. Complex transitive verbs and object complements. Marked and unmarked word order. 4.- The Noun Phrase: The determiner. Predeterminers and postdeterminers. Genitives. Generic reference. Proper nouns. Non-count nouns. Collective nouns. Pronouns. Noun Phrases in discourse. 5.- The Verb Phrase: Primary auxiliaries and the lexical verb. Tense. Aspect. Passive voice. Modality. Semi-auxiliaries. Mood and modality. Multi-word lexical verbs. The VP and the scope of negation. The VP and questions. 6.- Modification: Modification of the noun and the NP. Adjective complements. Use of the term adverb. Adjuncts. Disjuncts. Conjuncts. 7.- Clauses: Coordination and subordination: Clauses. Coordination. Subordination. Nominal clauses. Clauses as adjective complements. Postnominal modification. Adverbial clauses."
