General description "The course first briefly examines the origins, developments, characteristics and types of English for Specific Purposes courses, before attempting to arrive at a definition of ESP. Then it applies ESP concepts and principles to course design and implementation. To this aim, it first introduces learners to the most crucial concept in defining ESP, needs analysis, and discusses how the results from needs analysis may affect the design of ESP courses. Then it introduces students to current theories of L2 learning and the most influential theories of language description in ESP courses. Next, it will provide students with an overview of the major approaches to syllabus design in ESP. The course then attempts to help students understand how people use English for specific communicative purposes in the academic and professional fields. It will draw their attention to those areas of English language use that are currently focused on by ESP practitioners in order to explore how language variation takes place across genres. Various levels of language use will be explored: vocabulary, grammar, discourse and genre. Finally, the course will introduce the students to some of the most widely-used teaching techniques in ESP courses and will discuss the basic principles of task-based instruction more in detail." "
