The aim of this course is to develop students' translation skills in a variety of registers and styles by translating texts of a technical and scientific nature. Particular attention is placed on the acquisition of the right terminology and on the use of the appropriate register and style. The module involves the study of procedures and techniques for translation and encourages the analysis of translation problems in technical and scientific texts through commentary, comparative analysis and the use of parallel texts.

Objetivos

The aim of this course is to develop students' translation skills in a variety of registers and styles by translating texts of a technical and scientific nature. Particular attention is placed on the acquisition of the right terminology and on the use of the appropriate register and style. The module involves the study of procedures and techniques for translation and encourages the analysis of translation problems in technical and scientific texts through commentary, comparative analysis and the use of parallel texts.


Metodologías

The course will consist of a combination of lectures, seminars and practical classes in the computer room. A number of set readings will be made available at the beginning of the term. Class time will be devoted to a) brief theoretical introductions to the different sections, b) practical examples of the use of the various electronic tools available for computer-assisted translation, and c) the in-class correction of translation tasks, including pre-translation tasks of textual analysis.
Three hours a week will be devoted to these activities. One more out-of-class session ('no presencial') is for students to devote to individual work on readings and practical tasks.

N.B. As this is a final-year course, students are expected to have a very good command of the English language and native or near-native competence in Spanish.

1. Introduction to specialized translation: linguistic and textual features. Text typology according to intended readership: popular science, specialized journals, manuals, etc. 2. Terminology and information retrieval 3. Electronic tools for the translator: On-line dictionaries; lexicographic databases: EURODICAUTOM; Computer corpora: monolingual & parallel corpora; Translation memories: TRADOS 4. Translating the experimental sciences. 5. Translating the bio-medical sciences. 6. Translating the technical sciences.

Contrastive analyses of comparable and parallel texts. Revising, editing and evaluating scientific and technical translations. Evaluating translation tools. Corpus compilation techniques. Using concordancing tools for term extraction. Learning how to use a translation memory (TRADOS). "
