General description Pragmatics and discourse analysis are approacches to studying languages relation to contextual background features. Both approaches focus on the meaning of words in interaction and how interactors communicate more information than the words they use. The fundamental concepts in pragmatics and discourse are explained: context, speech act, cooperative principle, politeness, coherence, cohesion...
