"Goals of the subject: This is a four months intensive course with four one-hour lessons per week. It aims at covering an intermediate level of grammar and structural vocabulary of both spoken and written English, so that on completion of the course students should be able to understand and express themselves in a comprehensive form of English. Other goals of this course are to make students familiar with English texts concerning Economy and Business, and to enable them to get a proficiency in the manipulation of the language typical of the economic field" "

Objetivos

"Goals of the subject: This is a four months intensive course with four one-hour lessons per week. Metodologías
Classes will be fully in English, based on the course texbook. Students will be encouraged to take part in typical business English conversations and role-playings, as well as to work in couples and prepare different essays and tasks related to the business world during the term. Listenings and video tapes will be also employed during this subject. "

UNIT 1 / PERSON TO PERSON: Dealing with clients in face-to-face situations

UNIT 2 / PHONE CALLS: Using the telephone with clients and co-workers
6.-Hello, how may I help you?: Answering the phone, Making a good impression on the phone.
7.-Hold on, I just need to make a note: Understanding numbers and details, making notes, checking your notes.
8.-Is everything clear?: Taking long messages, leaving messages.
9.-I'm calling because...: Preparing to make a phone call, making different kinds of phone calls.
10.-I'm terribly sorry: Dealing with problems on the phone.

UNIT 3 / WRITING: Writing and replying to letters, e-mails, faxes and memos.
11.-Layout and content: Good layout and style in letters and faxes.
12.-You've got mail: Sending and receiving e-mail messages.
13.-Get it right!: Checking your spelling, correcting your punctuation.
14.-Keep it simple and make it clear: Writing simple sentences and short reports on meetings and phone calls.

UNIT 4 / EXCHANGING INFORMATION: Asking and answering questions.

19.-Could you tell me more...?: Asking follow-up questions, answering difficult questions.

UNIT 5 / MEETINGS: Taking part in meetings.

Rules to carry on exams:

In order to attend the final Exam, students will have to deliver previously the three compulsory essays and works. Access to the examination room will require the presentation of the student's ID card. No dictionaries or glossaries will be allowed. Smoking will not be allowed during the examination time.

Evaluation of the subject:

Students will be able to monitor their own progress by means of tutorials and several practice exercises during the term. Every student will be required to handle in three essays and works on dates duly announced in order to be able to pass the final examination. The final exam will be written, and it will cover most aspects of the course, including testing of reading comprehension, business writing, use of English and listening comprehension. Each part of the exam will specify its percentage over the final mark.

Rules to review exams:

After the final exam, a provisional list of marks will be published. In this paper, students will also find the time, place and dates for the corresponding exam review. Students willing to review their exam should apply previously. In case of disagreement with the result of this review of the final mark, students can start a formal complaining procedure, following the rules adopted by the Governing Board of the University of León
