"This course is aimed at developing students’ command of English spoken and written communication in Aeronautical Engineering. Therefore, special attention will be paid to the study and practice of morphosyntatic elements and vocabulary items most frequently used in aeronautical engineering discourse. In addition, classwork will be devoted to listening, writing, reading and spoken activities. On completion of the course students should be able, with reasonable proficiency, to read texts on academic and professional topics, to understand spoken discourse on technical matters, to make effective use of English in their own writing and to express themselves in their academic, profesional and social relations. The study and practice of grammar and lexical items to be found in engineering contexts will take up a large part of the course. " "

Objetivos

"Class time (counting as 6 credits) will be devoted to grammatical explanations and to carry out tasks which involve practising the communicative skills, some of which will be assigned as homework. " "

"CONTENTS The course covers the following topics, language functions, grammar and lexical items and text organization Topics: Engineering. Materials. Types of aeroplanes. Aircraft main parts and controls. Engines: jet engines and turbo-prop engines. Aerofoils. The lubrication system. The fuel and cooling systems. The starter and ignition systems. The brake system. Safety at work Language functions: making classifications; making definitions; making predictions; writing instructions; describing shape, position, connection and dimension describing components parts; describing function, purpose and means; describing cause and effect relationships; describing and interpreting a diagram, a table, etc.; explaining controls; expressing equivalence, non-equivalence and contrast; expressing basic mathematical operations; expressing certainty, probability, possibility and necessity; expressing concession; giving examples; writing and interpreting design specifications; expressing problems and giving solutions; adding information. Grammar and lexical items: technical and subtechnical vocabulary; mathematical symbols and abbreviations used in engineering; linear, square, cubic and capacity measures and weights; word formation: affixation, conversion and compounds; verbs and related nouns; common verbs in engineering; procedural vocabulary; connective and reference vocabulary; sentence and paragraph links; grammar links; the use of the passive; relative clause (defining): making definitions; relative clauses (non-defining): adding information; short relative clauses; cause and effect; cause and effect chains; reason and result clauses; time clauses and reduced time clauses; if/unless sentences; adverbial types and their positions; modal verbs; it is + adjective; allowing and preventing verbs; comparison. Text organization: sentence and paragraph building; organization of information; technical reports, abstracts and articles; letter of inquiry; order letter: printed order forms; complaint and adjustment letters; collection letters; letter of application: purpose of the letter, background information, and request for an interview; resume: information in a resume and types of resumes; memorandums, faxes and e-mail Reading comprehension and translation of texts related to Aeronautical engineering.
