General description | "Forest management is the manipulation of forests to meet specific objectives, such forest products, watershed and/or soil protection, wildlife, and recreation. The outcomes of forest management can promote, alter, or conserve a forest and can affect forest growth, structure, and composition. Forest management plans should consider the impacts of all desired outcomes, including the long-term sustainability of the forest. Modern forest management includes many analytical techniques. Intensive data gathering and research develops management alternatives that best meet the owner?s objectives. These objectives may reflect the interest of an individual owner or in the case of public lands, the needs of society. Silviculture deals with the biological aspect of forest management. Silviculture practices frequently mimic natural processes in forest development. Silviculture influences the establishment, growth, composition, health, and quality of forests. The goal of silviculture is to sustain forests to meet the diverse needs of society." " | |||||||||||||||||||||
