MAIN OBJECTIVE:To develop the skills and attitudes necessary to communicate in English for purposes related to physical activity and sport.
SECONDARY OBJECTIVES:
SECTION I: To develop the skills and attitudes necessary to understand and produce oral and written texts in English in the academic fields of physical activity and sports technique.
SECTION II: To develop the skills and attitudes necessary to understand and produce oral and written narrations in English on sports events.
SECTION III: To develop the skills and attitudes needed to apply for a job in English in the fields of physical activity and/or sport.
To develop the skills necessary to carry out academic study in English.
To develop the skills necessary to use the academic knowledge in professional settings.
To study some of the genres in English dealing with physical activity and sport most useful for the students (research articles, instructions,...)
To activate the passive language related to physical activity and sport learned during the students' experience previous to this course.
To value the importance of English in the historical development of the language of physical activity and, above all, sport, and its influence on the vocabulary of other languages, e.g. Spanish.
To value the importance of English for the international spreading of information about physical activity and sport through the "traditional" and electronic media.
To foster the development of learning skills so that students can continue learning independently once they have finished the course.
To provide the students with appropriate bibliographical references from 'traditional' as well as electronic resources which can lead them to further study.

Objetivos

SECTION I: TEXT TYPE: Academic texts: instructions and descriptions. TOPICS: Physical activity (fitness, aerobics,...). Physical education. Injuries and their treatment. Artistic gymnastics. Judo. Swimming. FUNCTIONS: Describing physical condition. Describing physical abilities and skills. Describing body positions and movements. Giving and following instructions to do exercise. Describing sports injuries, their causes and consequences and prescribing possible treatments. Describing sports techinque. GRAMMAR: Continuous present. Imperative. Passive voice. Modal verbs. Place and direction prepositions and adverbs. Nominalization. Ergativity. Adjectives + preposition. Quantifiers. VOCABULARY: Body parts, bones, muscles and organs. Verbs meaning movement, static position and catching. Adjectives describing physical condition. Injuries and treatments. Technical nouns: specific positions, movements or movement phases. Artistic gymnastics: apparatus and elements. Judo techniques: throws, grappling techniques,... Swimming: strokes and phases. Noun compounds.
SECTION II: TEXT TYPE: Sports news and sports reports. TOPICS: Sport (athletics, basketball, folk sports, football, informal sports, team handball, volleyball,...). FUNCTIONS: Describing sports facilities. Describing sports equipment. Describing the participants and their performances. Understanding sports reports: distinguishing objective from subjective elements. Narrating sports events. Giving opinions on sports events. GRAMMAR: Simple present. Present continuous. Past tense. Relative sentences. Comparative sentences. Time sentences. Other linking devices: cause, condition, consequence, contrast...VOCABULARY: Sports. Sports facilities. Sports equipment. Sportsmen, sportswomen and other sports agents. Sports events: participants, development and results. Sports regulations.
SECTION III. TEXT TYPE: Promotional genre: job adverstisements, CV's, application letters and job interviews. TOPICS: Jobs related to physical activity and sport. Personal, academic and professional characteristics. FUNCTIONS: Identifying the main features of a job advertisement. Identifying the components of a CV. Identifying the rhetorical organization of a job application or cover letter. Describing oneself (personal, academic and professional characteristics). GRAMMAR: Adjectives+ preposition. VOCABULARY: Jobs related to physical activity and sports. Nouns and verbs from the lexical field work. Adjectives describing s.b.'s personal, academic and professional abilities.
