Students will understand the causes of international accounting differences and the implications of accounting harmonization.
They will especially be familiar with the adoption of International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) by EU companies.

Contenidos

International Accounting 1. Basics in financial reporting: the balance sheet, the income statement, the statement of cash flows.
2. The role of conservatism in the evaluation of assets and liabilities.
3. Fair value accounting and historical cost accounting.
4. National differences in accounting systems.
5. Classification of accounting and reporting systems.
6. The pressure for international accounting harmonization.
7. "Anglo-Saxon" and "European Continental" accounting systems.
8. International accounting systems and the stock market.
9. Implications of accounting differences for financial statement analysis.
10. Global convergence, the role of US-GAAP and of the International Accounting Standards
Board (IASB).
11. The EU and other regulatory bodies involved in international accounting harmonization.
12. Adoption of international accounting standards in the EU. International business combinations,
goodwill and intangibles.
13. Accounting for derivatives and other financial instruments.
14. Accounting for foreign currency transactions and management of foreign exchange risk.
15. Inflation accounting.
16. Small GAAP vs. large GAAP.
17. Analysis of the most relevant International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRSs) issued by the IASB: lAS 1, lAS 17, lAS 38, lAS 39, IFRS 2, IFRS 3, IFRS 4. The new "Conceptual Framework" of the IASB.
