Master Thesis | Master Thesis within EMBS Master Programme - Guidelines I. General Structure • The master thesis is a 15 ECTS module within the EMBS and due in the third semester in Kassel (10 ECTS) and in the fourth semester in León (5 ECTS). • On the basis of 30 hours workload for each credit point there is specific time allocated to the master thesis (300 hours in Kassel and 150 hours in León); cf. appendix 2. • The evaluation is based on the final report and its presentation in León considering the thesis performance as a whole. An intermediate report and its presentation at the end of the semester in Kassel is a serious control step in the process towards the final result. At this point the students get a pass or no-pass evaluation. The latter requires a new start, in general with a new topic during the term in León. II. The Subject and the Process of Finding It • The master thesis subject results from changes in business, dynamics social, economic or technological framings or industry challenges and should be described and analysed in a systematic form, using existing theoretical knowledge and putting it in an adequate academic / scientific format. The student is expected to apply or develop solutions, proposals, approaches on the basis of convincing evaluations and a sound literature research.. • The initial proposal of a master thesis subject is the task of the students. They should use their prior experience from own work / internships, from the EMBS consultancy project, from cases and course work during their studies and suggest an interesting topic. A first discussion of the topic on the basis of a preliminary structure of the thesis with a member of the Kassel master thesis consultancy team is to take place not later than at the end of the fifth day officially allocated to the preparation of the master thesis. • The first step of the consultancy process is to decide on a (broad) topic and to determine an individual tutor in Kassel or in one of the other three locations. The final and binding topic is in any case to be formulated before handing in the intermediate report. The students hand in an extended exposé (14 to 20 pages) of their project including a detailed evaluation of related research, theory-driven research hypotheses und plan of the study in October of third semester. The exposé is evaluated and need to be approved by the tutoring team the students start collecting primary data, if needed in their projects. III. The Consultation • At both locations, Kassel and Leon a team of tutors is providing the students with individual consultations. Consultancy can take place in personal form in Kassel / León or may also be effected through e-mail, telephone or other media. • The consultation on formal aspects of the master thesis (how to quote etc.) is exclusively done in Kassel, both individually and in special classes; cf. appendices. • The students are expected to regularly be in contact with their tutors and inform them of the progress of the work, especially on major changes in the approach. V. The Evaluation Details • Two bound hard copies and one CD of the intermediate report and later of the final thesis are to be handed in at the end of the time allocated to the master thesis in Kassel or León respectively. The exact dates will be published at the beginning of the semesters in Kassel and León. • Evaluation is done by two academic teachers. In case of different marks an average will be calculated; in case of a pass or no-pass decision a third academic teacher determines the decision. • The presentations are weighted with 30%, the written reports with 70%. • The master thesis mark contributes 15/120 (12,5%) to the final mark. V. Contents of the Master Thesis (Intermediate and Final Report) and of the Presentations (cf. also appendix 1) • The intermediate and the final report of the master thesis have to contain: a. list of abbreviations (if existent) b. list of exhibits (if existent) c. table of contents d. report ( 50 to 80 pages for the intermediate one, 70 to 100 for the final one) e. appendices (if necessary) f. list of literature mentioned or quoted g. personal affirmation in lieu of oath that the thesis has be done by one’s own and all literature and sources used have been indicated • The presentations are 15 minutes Powerpoint-presentations, followed by a discussion of 15 minutes. The presentations are to explain the contents, methodology applied, and major findings. The discussion refers to the subject of the thesis and may include related areas. VI. Appendices Appendix 1 Major Formal Rules to Be Applied to the Master Thesis Structure of the Report Introduction - Definition of the problem and scope of the report / restrictions - Relevance of the Topic - Goals of the report - (Preliminary) Definition of Major Terms - Overview of the structure and contents of report Main Part In the main part of the report the topic is to be discussed in detail. It should be well structured into main chapters and sub-chapters. If ideas of other authors / literature is used, they are to be quoted (see below). This holds also true for tables / statistics and Internet sources. Conclusion In the conclusion of the thesis the results of the discussion are to be summed up. Furthermore an outlook to future developments and related fields can be given. Logic A logical structuring of the contents within a clear and consistent system is the basis of every thesis. The length of the chapters should reflect their importance. A chapter has to contain a certain volume of contents (at least 1 page). If there are remarks between a chapter and its sub-chapters they should be restricted to a very few introductory sentences. In case of a sub-division into sub-chapters the minimum number of sub-chapters is two. (Example: 1 1.1 1.2 2 ...) Parts logically belonging together have to be treated within in a chapter. The chapters and sections have to carry meaningful headings. Repetition of contents at various points of the report is to be avoided. Formalities Margins: left 5 cm (for binding) right 1,5 cm top 2,5 cm bottom 2 cm Font and size: Arial (11) or Times New Roman (12) Spacing: 1.5 line spacing Quotations: Should follow the APA Style Guide All sources quoted have to be listed (list of literature) in alphabetical order (if an author is quoted more than once in chronological order; if there is no author given in the source use “anon”). Personal interviews are also to be included with date, organisation, name of interviewee. Literature Access to local library (books etc.) & access to e-media (journals etc.): http://www.uni-kassel.de/ub/index.php ?
