General description | This course develops concepts and teaches skills related to flood and coastal risk management. The contents incorporate items about flooding causes, flood types and characteristics, river morphology, hydrological models, coastal dynamics, flood event prediction, and measures to reduce and mitigate damage in order to create a resilient society. The practical exercises follow the classical phases of any flood study: historical, geomorphological, hydrological and hydraulic analysis. For this reason this part of the course focuses in the extraction of the most relevant information from cartographic data (p.e. geological and topographical maps, among others), as well as from interpretation of aerial photographs and satellite images. Furthermore, students will learn discharge river frequency analysis to establish return periods and different hydrological models. English-friendly subject. | |||||||||||||||||||||

Others | There will be a written test (with objective multiple-choice questions and/or essay questions) in which the effective acquisition of theoretical knowledge and the degree of understanding of the subject will be assessed. The correct use of specific terminology will also be assessed, as well as the clarity and correctness of the writing. Likewise, it will be assessed through the correctness of the reports on the practicals and/or case studies. The ability to apply the knowledge acquired in practice will be assessed, as well as the degree of information research for the correct preparation of the practicals and practical work. The capacity for interpretation and the correct use of specific terminology will also be taken into account. Active participation in class will be considered, as well as the ability to design cartographic communication. |
The grade for the written test will have an overall value of 50% of the course. The overall grade for the practical work and/or practicals will be 45% of the course. Finally, the attendance to the activities of the course and especially the active participation in them will count as 5% of the course. |
